The True Village site in Madagascar's Boeny region features spectacular landscapes - waterfalls with primary forests in their gorges, and an enormous cave system with underground rivers and sunken woods. This project forms part of a 7-mile greenbelt extending to the Mariarano Reserve, connecting dry deciduous forest remnants with degraded areas that are being restored. The iconic Madagascar Baobab (Adansonia madagascariensis) flourishes here. Most remarkably, Eden safeguards a lake that is the unique home of a micro-endemic wolf spider (Hippasosa ghost), of which only approximately 30 individuals are known to exist anywhere on Earth. The area faces significant pressure from illegal logging. This reforestation project helps restore ecosystem services like flood control and erosion prevention while protecting endangered species including Coquerel's sifaka, Van Dam's Vanga, and Oustalet's chameleon. Carbon modeling projects an estimated 375,636 tonnes of CO2e sequestration over 30 years across 2,412 hectares. The project has created over 9,664 workdays for local communities. Eden employed an average of 46 full-time and 8 part-time staff per month at this site, working 21 days per month. A total of 252,600 trees have been planted, creating an estimated 9,664 workdays since February 2023.
A small to medium-sized tree (10-20m) native to Madagascar, also known as Madagascar almond. Valued for rapid growth and shade production. Harvested for medicinal purposes, dyes, and tannins.
A thorny small tree up to 9m, prevalent in tropical Africa and Madagascar. Produces sweet-sour green fruits that ripen to bright yellow. Communities rely on its nutritious fruit containing macronutrients, vitamins, and fiber.
Endemic to Madagascar, reaching 10-30m height. Prized for exceptional wood quality and medicinal properties. High germination success rate and resilient to fire, making it excellent for reforestation.
Native to tropical Africa and Madagascar, reaching 30m with 12m crown spread. Golden flowers with scarlet veins. Acidic fruit pulp used in food for centuries. Wood used for timber, fuel, and charcoal.
